Can a Locksmith Make a Car Key?

We can make a key for any car or truck, with or without the original. However, some keys are more straightforward to duplicate than others. Today's car keys feature technology that makes our lives easier, but it can also be tricky to get working in a replacement key. You must program key fobs because that is how they know how to communicate with your car and not every other car in the parking lot.

Advantages of Using an Auto Locksmith

You'll pay more when you get a replacement key from the car dealer. They generally outsource the job to an auto locksmith, so you'll save time and money by going to a locksmith yourself. There are other advantages of getting your replacement key from an auto locksmith:

  • Locksmiths have more flexible business hours and offer emergency service
  • We can come to you, which saves you the time, money, and hassle of having your car towed to a different location
  • Dealers book appointments weeks or months in advance, so the wait for service will be much longer

What to Bring

To make a replacement car key without the original, an auto locksmith will need a few things to know what type of key you need and proof that you own the vehicle.

  • Make, model, and year of the car
  • Registration
  • Title
  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)

Types of Keys

  1. Mechanical Key: The "OG" of car keys, a mechanical key is the kind you insert into a lock or ignition and turn. Unfortunately, cars made within the last 20 years don't have this type of key.
  2. Transponder Key: The most common car keys are mechanical keys with a transponder in the head. When you use this type of key, the transponder links to your vehicle to verify it's valid. This type of car key is more costly to replace because the transponder must be replaced and programmed.
  3. Remote & Key Combo: As the name implies, this type of car key features a mechanical key, a remote for locking and unlocking doors, and a transponder to allow for more high-tech features, like push-button start.
  4. Proximity Key Fob: The most complicated (and costly) car key is becoming increasingly common. This "smart key" is not a key but a device that will lock and unlock the car doors based on its proximity to the vehicle and can start the car remotely.
